Interest Group Activity

Dansguard, an Internet filtering program, is an issue at our school that has caused dissension and disagreement among certain groups: students, teachers, administration, community. An individual’s position on this issue depends, in large measure, on the group to which he or she belongs.

In this exercise, your group of five will form an interest group around this issue, taking a student position. Your assignment:

1. Give your group a name, such as FAD -- Foes Against Dansguard.
2. Identify what your group wants (and why), keeping in mind
a. what each of the other groups might want (and why).
b. that you can’t “have it all” because other groups will resist (although you can try if you can make a strong enough case).
Be specific! Itemize.

3. Strategize how you will go about getting what you want, including
a. who will you address
b. what steps will you take
Again, be specific!

4. In this exercise, identify: Who is the “government” you are trying to influence? Who are your friends (people who identify with your cause and can help you)? Who is the public? Who is the lobbyist?

Get somebody in the group to write your answers down. Act as if you will follow up on this -- that it is real. After about twenty minutes of brainstorming and writing down your ideas, you will share them with the class.
